Everybody has a brain, yet few people think about what it is and what it does. If  you want to be a healthy person, you at least need to know some of the essential facts about your brain. The more you educate yourself about it, the more you will know about looking after it. Since few schools cover the human brain in biology, some of us could go our entire lives without ever knowing anything about it. Here are ten surprising facts you didn’t know about your brain.

  1. Your brain is mostly fat

Most people think that the brain is all muscle. That is what people will lead you to believe when you talk to them about it. In fact, a massive 60% of your brain is fat. The brain has the largest fat content of any organ in the body. The organ is muscle, fat and liquids, which work to help you think, remember and make decisions.

  1. A brain injury might make you pass out

When you have a sudden brain injury, there is a high chance that you will pass out right away. If you start to lose blood from your brain, it will take you less than ten seconds to feel dizzy and faint. If someone else is with you when you have an accident, it is vital that they call the police and an ambulance as soon as possible. The sooner a medic sees you, the better chance you have of surviving the injury.

If you have a stroke at some point in your life, it is unlikely that you will ever make a full recovery. Much of the time, when people have this problem, they end up with brain damage and further health problems. So, what causes people to have a stroke? Well, the problem starts when someone gets a blood clot in their veins. Over time, that clot will move up through their system towards your brain. When it reaches their brain, it will cut the oxygen off. Brains need oxygen to function, and so a stroke occurs.

Neurologists have found that people make new brain paths in their mind all the time. When you think a new thought or learn a new fact, your brain will create a new path so that you can return to that thought whenever you need to do so. That means that as you learn, it changes the way your brain works. The more you know, the more complex your mind becomes. This fact is one of the main reason that education is so important.

If you needed another excuse to eat chocolate, here it is. You know how people tell you that chocolate makes them happy? Well, they might just be telling the truth. Some studies have found that the smell and taste of chocolate make your brain release pleasure hormones. That means that when you have chocolate, it makes you feel joyful.

When you can speak more than one language, it means that the density of your brain is much larger than when you only speak one. Researchers looked  at the brains of bilingual children and compared them to kids who speak just one language. Their findings were quite surprising. They found that children who could speak two (or even more) languages have heavier brains than the rest of the children.

These days, people can’t seem to tear themselves away from their mobile phones. It might be checking your emails, updating your Facebook status or just playing angry birds. All that phone activity could have a damaging effect on your brain, though, so you might want to put your phone down from time to time. Studies have found that the more people use their phone and other gadgets; the more likely they are to have slow brain activity.

If you want to look after your brain on a day to day basis, you should make sure that you exercise. There is a strong link between physical and mental health. If your body is not healthy, there is no way that your brain can be either. You should make sure that you take part in a regular form of exercise each day. It doesn’t matter what it is. Do something that you enjoy. For example, if you like dancing, you might want to start a salsa class. What matters is that you get the exercise you need.

When you drink alcohol, you tend to lose a whole load of your brain power. Drinking tends to decrease the amount of oxygen your brain gets. The lack of oxygen means that your brain can’t work the same way that it usually does. It affects your decision-making abilities and your memory. When you first have a drink of alcohol, it takes around six minutes for it to change the way that your brain works. For example, if you have a couple of shots of vodka, you might feel fine for a few minutes, but then your drunkenness will hit you.

Looking after your brain and your mental health is as important as looking after your physical health. You have a duty to your body to look after it and ensure you do something positive for your mind each day. That way, you can keep your brain strong and healthy no matter what happens!
